OrionHacks is this January 16-18th – a 3-day virtual hackathon with over $50,000 in prize value (prizes, swag bundles, and raffles) consisting of hundreds of students around the world who will be working on projects that aim to solve problems in society using technology.

This year's theme is on Global Issues. Build a hack that addresses a global issue we are facing today! 

Eligibility

In order to participate in OrionHacks, you must be in high school or college. If you are younger/older and would like to compete, shoot us an email at team@orionhacks.tech and we will work with you on an individual basis.

Teams can be maximum 4 people, and everyone must be present at the hackathon to participate. 

Requirements

You must:

  • Specify if you are a beginner (aka. first hackathon), thus qualifying you for the "Best Beginner Hack"
  • Specify if you are competing for a category prize (ex: Best Environmental Hack, Best Hardware Hack, Best iOS Hack, etc)
  • Submit a ✨ 3 minute video ✨ demoing your wonderful project (MAX 3 min, no exceptions)

Judging Criteria

  • Technicality
    Is the hack technically interesting or difficult? Is it just some lipstick on an API, or were there real technical challenges to surmount?
  • Originality/Creativity
    Is the hack reinventing the wheel (i.e. recreating another social/mobile/local app)? Or, is the hack entirely novel, an out of the box idea, and one that makes you have to say “wow! this is a fantastic hack!”.
  • Polish/Functionality
    How usable is the hack? Is the experience smooth and error-free? Is the hack a functional, working project, rather than just an idea?
  • Usefulness
    Is the hack practical? Is it something people would actually use? Does it fulfill a real need people have?
  • Presentation
    How clearly is the hack presented? Is the submission video well created? Does the presentation look professional and well-articulated?
